White River EV Challenge Visit

The Solar Car team was recently visited by two teams that had recently participated in the recent White River Rotary Club EV Challenge 2013. They were High School teams, Cyril Clarke High School from Mataffin, Nelspruit in Mpumulanga and Grantleigh College from Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.

Hummer explains why he almost “…did a #1…” in the cockpit of the car on the first day of the Solar Challenge

Both had performed outstandingly in the latest White River EV Challenge, and, as part of the recognition of their excellent work, were rewarded with a trip that in part, lucky for us, included a visit to the NMMU and the eLab to view the solar car and to also meet & spend time with the team. Our guys took our enthusiastic visitors through the development and build of the solar car, explaining the whole process in detail, as well as showing them around the many other projects currently on the boil in the eLab.

Driver fitment for the SASC’14 was going pretty well – let’s hope that canopy doesn’t stick like last time; those parents weren’t at all happy about not getting their kid back…

We also had a long sit-down discussion with these intrepid, bright young designers, who then also gave us a lot of background into their event, their vehicles & their teams, and how they went about the preparations to their event. Fascinating stuff, and good to see there was quite a lot of commonality in the two challenges – well done guys!

The whole happy group together…

We were all mightily impressed I can tell you, and hope we have encouraged each other to strive even higher next time around – hopefully you also went away from here with a longing to come back one day as a full-time NMMU student, working on the solar car of course!
