GRANTLEIGH College Grade 10 pupil Michael van Niekerk is known for his passion for science and previously entered the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists competition, winning a gold medal at the International Science Fair for his project entitled ‘Energy Through Motion’.

He continued to develop his idea and entered the Eskom eta Awards in July.

The eta Awards reward exceptional effort in the more efficient use of energy by individuals, students, companies or other institutions.

Michael’s project found favour with the judges and he was selected to go through to the second round, which involved an interview in Johannesburg.

He impressed the judges yet again and was selected as one of three finalists for the final round.

The winners and runners-up will be announced at a gala event in Johannesburg on 28 November.
