Leadership Policy (Drafted January 2014 and amended July 2015)


At Grantleigh we strive to develop leadership in all our students as all students have leadership potential. By giving them the knowledge about leadership styles, management roles and equipping them with the skills necessary for the outside world, we believe we are producing students with vision, purpose and the ability to become the leaders of tomorrow.










Student leaders shall:

  • be loyal, honest, polite and show integrity in all dealings on behalf of Grantleigh
  • adhere to the school code of conduct concerning both dress and behaviour
  • respect the Executive Head, the management team, the teachers and students of Grantleigh
  • make a positive and meaningful contribution to their portfolio committee, on the understanding that the duty performed as a committee member is vital to the well-being and good governance of Grantleigh
  • carry out their duties to the best of their ability and strive to develop new ideas and implement them
  • at all times behave in a manner which will reflect their position as a leader and shall strive to be a worthy ambassador for their school

How do we do this in the NSC phase?

    Not all students will excel as leaders but all will gain significant skills, knowledge and values regarding leadership.

    During Grade 10 the students are introduced in Life Orientation lessons to the concepts of leadership.
    During Grade 11 the students do a personal development workshop in the first term which is based on the principles of leadership as instituted by Ubuhle HR and Management Consultants. During talks and activities, they begin to understand the concepts and values that underpin personal growth and potential leadership.
    Grade 11 students also complete a one-day Leadership Course during the second term and attend a Leadership Camp at Seula in the third term.

    Towards the end of the third term, we have our Leadership Nominations. All students in Grade 9, 10 and 11 will have an opportunity to nominate 12 students in Grade 11 for leadership positions. The current group of Prefects and staff also nominate 12 students in Grade 11.

     

    Prefects

    The prefect system at Grantleigh is an integral part of the Grantleigh ethos and is supported by students and staff members alike. This system is underpinned by the value of servant-leadership. The Executive Head, Operational Head of the College and the Leadership Coordinator will discuss the nominations and the Executive Head will make the final decision on the appointment of prefects. The prefect positions are not house-based.
    The newly appointed prefects attend a prefect leadership camp where they explore the concepts of servant-leadership, time management, stress and balancing the demands of managing the student body with their academic priorities.

     

    House Captains

    The Executive Head, Operational Head of the College, the Leadership Coordinator and the House Directors will also use the prefect nominations to appoint the House Captains.  From 2016, House Captains will be chosen from the prefects elected and they will be voted for by all students in the House. The ballot will have a list of prefects from that House and a boy and girl from each House will be chosen. Head Prefects and Deputy Head Prefects are not eligible for House Captain positions.

     

    Portfolios

    The prefects form part of the school management team and the remainder of the students elect to serve on portfolio committees under a teacher-supervisor. Each portfolio will nominate a Student Manager. In this way, almost all matrics have a leadership role in the school. Each portfolio must have representation from the three Houses.

    The portfolios enable all our students to contribute in a meaningful and positive way to life at Grantleigh. It is heartwarming to see the growth in many of our students as they realise that there are many forms of leadership, other than being a prefect within the school.

    The portfolios are Health and Safety, Culture, Public Relations, Information Technology, Sport, Esprit de Corps, Academic Support, Environmental and Community Partnerships.

    Selection for the portfolio positions is on an application basis and specific selection criteria apply for each position. Every Grade 11 student receives a comprehensive explanation of the system in the included Information Brochure that details the selection criteria and the various job descriptions.

     

    LRC

    • Democratic, student-run forum used as a platform to raise student concerns
    • 1 from each academic class (i.e. from Grade 7 to Grade 11 = 15 members)
    • Grade 12 students are represented by their House Captains
    • Must campaign (prepared speeches) for election
    • Nominees will be voted for by secret ballot in academic register classes and elected to the LRC
    • Head Prefects continue to run LRC (2 members)
    • House Captains are also part of LRC (6 members)
    • Head of Houses (Boarding Establishment) are also part of LRC (2 members)

    Mentorship

    • Not all tutor groups will have matric students
    • Grade 12 and Grade 11 students will mentor younger students in group – tutor will decide the pairings
    • Senior students have an opportunity to be a leader and a role model in their tutor groups

    Bus Monitors

    Students who wish to apply to be bus monitors must submit an application to the Leadership Coordinator. The bus monitors play a vital leadership role and are tasked to ensure the safety of all our students that travel on the buses.
